Vedic Nakshatra Chart for Kundli Matching
27 Nakshtras Vedic Chart

Gun Milan — also called Ashtakoot Milan, Kundli Matching, or Horoscope Matching — is the cornerstone compatibility assessment of Vedic astrology, practiced for thousands of years as an essential part of the Hindu marriage tradition. In this system, the birth Nakshatra (lunar mansion) and Moon sign of the prospective groom and bride are used to evaluate eight distinct dimensions of compatibility, called Kutas. Each Kuta carries a weighted point value, and the total out of 36 points determines the overall suitability of the match. The eight Kutas assess personality alignment, mutual attraction, psychological wellbeing, physical compatibility, intellectual harmony, temperamental balance, financial and family prosperity, and genetic-health compatibility — making Gun Milan one of the most holistic pre-marital compatibility frameworks in any ancient tradition worldwide.

Our free online Gun Milan Calculator uses authentic, shastra-compliant rules for every calculation. Select the birth Nakshatra and Pada (quarter), and the tool automatically derives the Moon sign (Rashi) and computes all eight Kutas. It also detects the three major doshas — Nadi Dosha, Bhakoot Dosha, and Gana Dosha — including their classical cancellation conditions and recommended remedies.

The Eight Kutas of Ashtakoot Milan

Each of the eight Kutas examines a specific life domain. Their combined maximum is 36 points, with the weight of each Kuta proportional to its importance in married life.

Did you know? The sum 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8 = 36. The heaviest weight goes to Nadi Kuta (health) at 8 points, reflecting the Ayurvedic insight that physical wellbeing is the foundation of a successful partnership. Varna Kuta carries only 1 point — social temperament, while relevant, is the least decisive factor.

How to Interpret Your Gun Milan Score

A minimum of 18 out of 36 is traditionally required for a match to proceed to marriage. The presence and severity of doshas must be assessed alongside the numerical score.

The Three Major Doshas in Gun Milan

Nadi Dosha is the most serious of the three primary doshas. It occurs when both partners share the same Nadi — Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), or Antya (Kapha) — causing the Nadi Kuta score (8 points) to become zero. Classical texts link it to health issues and difficulties in progeny. Classical cancellation conditions exist: if both share the same Nakshatra, or if both share the same Moon sign, the dosha is nullified or reduced.

Bhakoot Dosha arises when the Moon signs stand in a 6/8, 9/5, or 12/2 relationship, reducing Bhakoot Kuta to zero (7 points lost). It is automatically cancelled if the Moon sign lords are mutual friends or the same planet. Gana Dosha occurs when the Ganas are incompatible — most severely when one partner is Deva Gana and the other Rakshasa Gana, reflecting a fundamental temperamental difference.

Vivahe shubhe karye nakshatram vicharayet — In auspicious acts such as marriage, the Nakshatra must always be examined.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gun Milan and why is it important for marriage?

Gun Milan (also called Ashtakoot Milan or Kundli Matching) is a Vedic astrology method that evaluates the compatibility of two prospective marriage partners across eight specific dimensions based on their birth Nakshatras and Moon signs. With a maximum of 36 points, it assesses harmony in temperament, health, mental alignment, physical compatibility, progeny prospects and overall marital happiness. It has been integral to the Hindu marriage tradition for thousands of years and remains a widely used structured framework for evaluating long-term relationship suitability.

What Gun Milan score is considered good for marriage?

Traditionally, a minimum of 18 out of 36 points is required. A score of 24 or above is considered good, 28 or above excellent, and 32 or above is exceptionally auspicious. However, the score alone does not tell the full story — the presence of major doshas (Nadi, Bhakoot, Gana) must also be assessed. A high score with a severe uncancelled dosha may require remedial measures, while a moderate score with no doshas can still indicate a harmonious match.

Can marriage happen if the Gun Milan score is below 18?

Gun Milan is one important factor but not the sole determinant. A score below 18 does not make a match impossible. A qualified astrologer will also examine the full Kundli of both individuals — including the 7th house, Venus and Jupiter placements, Mangal Dosha, and Dasha periods — before making a recommendation. Prescribed Vedic remedies can also mitigate the effects of doshas and lower scores in many cases.

What is Nadi Dosha and how serious is it?

Nadi Dosha is the most serious of the three primary doshas in Gun Milan. It occurs when both partners share the same Nadi — Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), or Antya (Kapha). Classical texts associate it with health complications and difficulties in having children. It causes the Nadi Kuta score (8 points) to become zero. Classical cancellation conditions include: both partners sharing the same Nakshatra, or both sharing the same Moon sign. Remedies include Mahamrityunjaya mantra japa, Nadi Nivarana Homa, and cow donation, performed under guidance of a qualified astrologer.

What is Bhakoot Dosha and when does it get cancelled?

Bhakoot Dosha occurs when the Moon signs of the groom and bride stand in a 6/8, 9/5, or 12/2 positional relationship, reducing the Bhakoot Kuta score to zero (7 points lost). It is traditionally considered inauspicious for marital happiness, finances, and progeny. However, it is automatically cancelled when the two Moon sign lords are mutual friends, or when both partners share the same Moon sign lord. Our calculator detects and applies these cancellation rules automatically.

What is Gana Dosha in Kundli matching?

Gana Dosha arises from incompatible Ganas — the three temperament categories in Vedic astrology: Deva (divine, gentle), Manushya (human, balanced), and Rakshasa (intense, independent). When the Ganas of two partners are incompatible — most seriously when one is Deva and the other Rakshasa — Gana Dosha is formed, reflecting a fundamental difference in core temperament. The Manushya-Rakshasa combination is mild, while Deva-Rakshasa is severe. Strong Graha Maitri (planetary friendship) can partially offset this dosha.

What is the difference between Nakshatra and Rashi in Gun Milan?

The ecliptic is divided into 12 Rashis (Moon signs) and 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions). Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 Padas, and every 9 Padas make one Rashi. For Gun Milan, knowing the Nakshatra and Pada gives the most accurate results because Yoni, Tara, Gana, and Nadi Kutas are all computed from Nakshatra data. The Rashi-based method can only compute Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri, and Bhakoot Kutas, which is why the Nakshatra-based method is always preferred.

Is Gun Milan necessary for love marriages?

Gun Milan can offer useful insight for love marriages as well, since it assesses temperamental compatibility, health alignment, and long-term harmony. Many Vedic astrologers recommend performing Gun Milan even in love marriages, particularly to check for severe doshas such as Nadi or Bhakoot Dosha, which have physical and generational implications. Some astrologers also note that for love marriages, deeper chart analysis — covering the 7th house, Venus, and Dasha periods — may provide more nuanced guidance than Gun Milan scores alone.

Is Mangal Dosha (Mars Dosha) included in Gun Milan?

No — Mangal Dosha is a separate analysis and is not part of the Ashtakoot Gun Milan system. It is determined by Mars's placement in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the natal chart. A complete Kundli matching process should include both Gun Milan (Ashtakoot) and a separate Mangal Dosha check. Since Mangal Dosha analysis requires the full birth chart, it cannot be computed using Nakshatra and Rashi data alone.

How accurate is this online Gun Milan Calculator?

This calculator is built on authentic Vedic astrology rules as documented in classical texts including Muhurta Chintamani and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. All eight Kutas are computed from Nakshatra data using traditional scoring rules, and major dosha detection includes classical cancellation conditions. Results are most accurate when you know your precise birth Nakshatra and Pada. For any major life decision such as marriage, a comprehensive Kundli analysis by a qualified Jyotishacharya is always recommended alongside this tool.

What are the remedies for Nadi Dosha in Vedic astrology?

Classical Vedic texts prescribe several remedies for Nadi Dosha: recitation of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra (traditionally 1,25,000 times as a Purashcharana), performance of a Nadi Nivarana Homa (fire ritual), donation of a cow (Go-daan), donation of a gold thread (symbolic Nadi), and charitable acts on auspicious days. The specific remedy depends on the severity of the dosha and other chart factors. Consulting a qualified and trustworthy astrologer before undertaking any remedy is strongly advised.
